You don't know FUTSAL?
Watch this!
What is futsal? Well, in a nutshell, it is the official FIFA version of indoor soccer. Started in 1930 in Uruguay, it has been spread and perfected to international acclaim with World Cups now being held regularly since 1989.
You should know that there are three main improvements that futsal makes over the common indoor soccer that you may have played in old converted hockey rinks or grade school gyms. First, futsal is played on a polyethylene floor to help with traction and make it easier on the knees. Second, no walls or boards are used and instead lines are painted for official play. And third, a heavier and smaller (size 4) ball is used to promote greater ball control. This immensely increases the speed and fun of both playing and watching the game.
Futsal games are played with a goalie plus four players aside. Seven additional substitute players are allowed for a maximum of twelve players per team. Substitutions can be made at any time including when the ball is in play. Games consist of two periods of 20 minutes each with a break in between.
So futsal is similar, but oh so much better than indoor soccer. Rather than a kick-and-run style of play with players often fighting along boards, futsal employs more strategy and creative play. The fact that it emphasizes greater individual and team skills is also a huge plus in training for outdoor soccer. It’s no surprise then that futsal is even more popular than football (soccer) in places like Brazil and Argentina – and that’s saying something!
Come on out and see what all the fuss is about. Let's
play some futsal! |
